It may sound like an exaggeration but think about it he does all these things so he can get back to Ithaca to see his wife and son. So he can be king again. This all leads one to think that he may not be a hero. He is putting himself above his crew cheating on his wife and showing killing people unnecessarily. I am here to answer the question was Odysseus really a hero. So what makes a hero? In my opinion a hero is someone who puts others infront of him self for a greater good. Better put a hero is not always someone whom does something cool like blind a Cyclops but someone who puts others in front of himself to achieve something good. So someone like mother Teresa would be considered a hero. The highest award is the Medal of Honor given to someone who goes above and beyond what is required. You dont get a medal of honor for killing a ton of people you get a medal of honor for saving a ton of people or leading people through a minefield after having many opportunities to turn back. So you could say that a hero is a great leader. Was Odysseus a great leader? Think of how many people died because of his mistakes for example Odysseus gets curious and decides to bring some of his crew to explore an island. But before Odysseus leaves he decides to cheat on his wife with Calypso. Before this happens he even says Neverless, It is my one wish, the never fading ache in my heart, to return to her and to my own house. (Hinds 52) Yet a page later it shows him making love to Calypso. This is not a one time thing but a trend starts to show when he does it again with Circe. On this occasion Circe turns his men into pigs then when Odysseus goes to save them he recives a magical plant that will allow him to not be effected by spell she puts into he soup. She has type 2 diabetes mellitus which she was diagnosed with ten years ago. She reports that she attends a local diabetic patient group meeting composed of 17 individuals where they regularly share their experiences with the condition and receive education from a community healthy provider. She has been using oral hyperglycemic agents as well as injectable insulin therapy in the management of her condition. She started to use insulin therapy exclusively due to the ineffectiveness of the oral hyperglycemic agent-metformin that failed to improve her condition due to lack of adherence to the prescribed daily intake. She reports to be forgetful and hates taking any oral drugs but prefers injectable medication. She was hospitalised 12 years ago after sustaining a fracture of her left lower limb femur after falling while she was jogging as a part of her thrice a week morning exercises. On hospitalisation, she was further diagnosed with a secondary diagnosis of hypertension which she has also been managing with an intake of oral hypertensive medication such as hydralazine combined with hydrochlorothiazide. Initially, before she retired at the age of 50 years, she used to involve herself in community activities and excesses since she is a fan of athletics. On the other hand, she used to smoke and drink alcohol a habit she developed since she was in college in her twenties. At the moment, she takes alcoholic beverages and occasionally smokes regardless of being advised against it after being diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension. She trained as a banker in college, and she has been working as one until she retired. After retiring, she started managing her supermarket business investments where she is driven to and picked from each morning and evening respectively. Her favourite food is beef which she takes at least five times a week. In addition, she consumes a variety of snacks daily accompanied with coffee. After retiring, she never involved herself in her routine jogging exercises but reports that she felt too old and exhausted to perform them regularly as she used to before. In ad dition, she states having developed poor eyesight of late years, a factor that she attributes to her falling after tripping and sustaining a fracture of the femur while she was jogging. Furthermore, she currently has a foot ulcer that she developed about six months ago. She receives a check-up four times a week from a home-based healthcare provider who is also a podiatrist besides her foot being dressed daily to prevent infection and deterioration of her condition but promote healing (Zochodne Malik, 2014). She has a height of 1.65 meters, a weight of 102 kilograms and a body mass index (BMI) of 37.47 kg/m2. She is, therefore, obese, one of the risk factors for both type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension besides other cardiovascular diseases (Watson Dokken, 2014) Some of the non-pharmacological interventions that have been recommended and used in the management of her diabetic condition include development of a strict diet plan, exercises, health education to create awareness of the risk factors, complications, and self-management, losing weight. Moreover, health care providers have utilized cognitive behaviour therapy, motivational interviews, and assessment of eating disorders in the effort to manage her diabetic condition non-pharmacologically. However, due to lack of adherence to treatment strategies by Mrs. Elizabeth and other diabetic individuals, there is a need for the community health care management team to utilize the diabetic model of care in order to provide quality ser vice delivery and consequently improve their clients conditions (Dunning, 2014). Most of the individuals affected by type 2 diabetes mellitus in this locality and most other communities are those aged above 60 years. However, other age group individuals are also affected but at a significantly lower rate. Type two diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease that develops over time, and it is characterised by resistance to insulin, and consequently high blood glucose levels and in some cases, there can be reduced insulin production (Daniels, 2012). It is closely associated with some risk factors that are most prevalent in the locality of my current clinical practice that includes lifestyle aspects such as inadequate dietary intake that leads to overweight and obesity. Obesity is the leading cause and risk factor of type two diabetes mellitus. High accumulation of fat cells throughout the body plays a significant role in the development of insulin resistance and hence there is the establishment of the condition. Secondly, most individuals engage in recreational intake of alcohol, smoking, and sedentary lifestyle. Alcohol consumption and tobacco smoking contribute to the rapid progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and even renal diseases (Novak, Costantini, Schneider Beanlands, 2013). They may also predispose one to several other mental diseases that have an impact on the social and eating behaviours of the affected individuals. Eating disorders such as binge eating disorder as well as bulimia nervosa have far-reaching detrimental effects on the affected persons health besides markedly contributing to the development of other risk factors such as obesity (Behshid Garrusi, Mohammad Reza Baneshi Samaneh Moradi, 2013). On the other hand, the most affected population (above 60 years) mostly engage in no physical activities such as exercises due to their advanced age or other health conditions that hinder them from being able to do these activities. Thus most of these individuals lead a sedentary lifestyle that leads to obesity that is implicated in hypertension and diabetes as well as other cardiovascular and renal diseases (Daniels, 2012). Lack of adequate health education and information among the general population usually, predisposes them to lifestyle conditions like diabetes, hypertension among others due to lifestyle practises, lack of regular medical check-ups and lack of adherence to disease management programs that prevent further progression and deteriorations. On the other hand, there are a number of physical, socio-economic, cultural and religious determinants that are related to diabetes mellitus affecting this population. Firstly, a broad range of cultural beliefs and practises that are diverse have both positive and negative influences on the health of the people and their health seeking behaviours (Commers, 2012). For instance, it has been noted that males are generally reluctant in the search for medical services at the early onset of illness as compared to their female counterparts. In the same way, adherence to the treatment programs is higher in females than males a factor that has a negative impact on the progression of the particular diseases in men. Secondly, social, economic status is related to type 2 diabetes mellitus in that it is majorly experienced by the high social class individuals due to a sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary habits. On the other hand, it may be attributed to substandard education, low income, lack of access to specialized health care, lack of exposure to mass media, the high cost of living, poor health services and lack of insurance cover for those affected by the low social class. The discrepancy in the government policies that are concerned with the regulation of smoking, intake of alcohol and other substances also have detrimental effects on the health of the entire population. For instance, smoking in public exposes every non-smoker to tobacco effects since they are passive smokers and therefore may experience the same effects as the active smoker albeit different in intensities depending on the amount and duration of exposure. Finally, family history, age, and genetic factors are other non-modifiable determinants of health that have a broad range of impacts on the health of the population. Advanced age and those with a history of obese and diabetes have a greater risk of developing this condition as compared to the general population who have no family history of the condi tion. Furthermore, family history can be closely associated with genetic and hereditary traits that are passed on from generation to another through offspring that increase the risks of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus in some individuals than others (World Health Organization, 2013). Pharmacological interventions that are provided in the management of diabetes, as well as its complication, have different mechanisms of action hence affecting various body tissues that are affected by type 2 diabetes mellitus pathophysiology. In essence, development of these interventions, diagnosis, and prescription of medications in the treatment of these conditions is largely dependent on the understanding of their pathophysiology. Environmental and genetic factors are the initiators of type 2 diabetes mellitus initiators. It can be due to impaired insulin secretion or due to generalized insulin resistance in the body but in most instances, these factors coexist. Due to dysfunction of pancreatic beta cells, there is reduced or no release of insulin in response to increased blood glucose a common phenomenon in healthy individuals. This dysfunction is caused by reversible metabolic abnormalities such as glucotoxicity and lipotoxicity, hormonal imbalance in the body, increased apopt osis of beta cells in the pancreas (Copstead Banasik, 2013). Reduced insulin production, therefore, leads to hyperglycaemia which is termed as type 2 diabetes mellitus. This condition is progressive, and its effects are typically felt when the body is unable to adapt to the increasingly high blood glucose levels due to permanent destruction of the beta cells. On the other hand, it can develop due to increased resistance to insulin by the body cells. There is the usual production of insulin by the beta cells only that the insulin does not exert an adequate effect on the insulin receptors in the body cells especially the muscle and liver cells due to resistance. Development of the disease in this manner is linked to genetic factors that affect insulin signals in the cells more than the environmental factors. Obesity increased fatty acids and adipokines also contribute to the increase of this resistance. This leads to lack of conversion glucose to glycogen and uptake of glucose by cel ls. Therefore, pharmacological interventions such as insulin therapy are aimed at supplying the body with enough insulin in the case of reduced or no production in order for the blood glucose regulation to occur normally. It enhances the storage and metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats which occur primarily in the liver, muscles and adipose tissue where there is a large number of its receptors on the cellular plasma membrane. It is also known to affect cell membrane transport characteristics, cellular growth, enzyme activation and changes in protein and fat metabolism by promoting rapid uptake of these substances by cells. However, caution should be taken when administering injectable insulin not to result in hypoglycaemia, a condition that has detrimental effects on ones health to the extent that it can cause death. Oral hyperglycemic agents such as chlorpropamide act by mainly stimulating the release of insulin from functional beta cells of the pancreatic islet tissue. Another oral hyperglycemic agent, metformin acts by decreasing gluconeogenesis and increasing peripheral glucose metabolism and therefore controlling the high glucose levels in the blood (Bennett, Brown Sharma, 2012). High glucose levels in the blood increase the oncotic pressure within the cardiovascular system hence leading to retention of more water and causing cardiovascular overload. Since ones blood pressure is directly determined by volume and resistance, it rises with this increased water retention and therefore causing hypertension. This condition may worsen over time if not controlled by lifestyle modifications such as reduced sodium intake. It may also significantly influence the development of renal diseases, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases. Other complications that are known to be as a result of diabetes are foot ulcers and peripheral neuropathy. In order to control hypertension and prevent further complications, one is offered antihypertensive therapy such a s hydralazine and hydrochlorothiazide (Randall, Kendall Alexander, 2012). The best outcome for this population is improved knowledge of the risk factors, causative factors, and self- management strategies. In Mrs Elizabeths management and other diabetic patients in her locality, there is need to utilize the diabetic model of care as well which is composed of eight priorities which include; enhancing community and targeted promotion of healthy environment and lifestyle to curb diabetes, improved and coordinated activities of diabetes management services, involving specialists in the management and prevention, ensuring access to management and guidelines for the affected population, developing supplemental useful information and technology systems and training more multi-professional experts (Ricci-Cabello et al. 2013). However, there are several limitations and hindrances to meeting these outcomes. Firstly, it requires that one invests in purchasing the glucose monitoring glucometer that may be a challenge among those from a low social class. Some individuals may be too old and having no social support, and therefore adherence may be poor. As well, other health factors such as mental and neurological illnesses such as neuropathy, disability, and dementia may hinder one from performing these self-management procedures independently (Peu, 2012). Due to substandard education and illiteracy as well as the language barrier, information dissemination, and comprehension by the targeted population may be jeopardized, and thus the careful choice of the media for health literacy should be made for any particular group. In conclusion, Elizabeths condition, as well as those of her locality suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus, can be managed with the utilization of various strategies. Positive intentions do not always bring about desirable effects. The Yellow Wallpaper is an example of such an occurrence. In this short story the narrator is detained in a lonesome, drab room in an attempt to free herself of a nervous disorder. During the era in which this narrative was written such practices were considered beneficial. The narrators husband, a physician adheres to this belief and forces his wife into a treatment of solitude. Rather than heal the narrator of her psychological disorder, the treatment only contributes to its effects, driving her into a severe depression. Under the orders of her husband, the narrator was moved to a house far from society in the country, wherein she is locked into an upstairs room. This environment serves not as an inspiration for mental health but as an element of repression. The locked door and barred windows serves to physically restrain her. The windows are barred for little children, and there are rings and things in the walls.(p218). Being exposed to the room's yellow wallpaper is dreadful and fosters only negative creativity. The color is hideous enough, and unreliable enough, and infuriating enough, but the pattern is torturing.(p224). All through the story the yellow paper acts as an antagonist causing her to become very annoyed and disturbed. There is nothing to do in the secluded room but stare at the wallpaper. The narrator tells of the haphazard pattern having no organization or symmetrical plot. Her constant examination and reflection of the wallpaper causes her much travail. I determine for the thousandth time that I will follow that pointless Johnston 2 pattern to some sort of a conclusion. (p221). The treatments call for isolation was a repressive factor .The narrator did not believe isolation would cure her disorder. Social contact and outside stimulation was her desire. I sometimes fancy that in my condition if I had less opposition and more society and stimulus, but John says the worst thing I can do is think about my condition.(p217). She was cut off from society and forbidden from seeing her baby. It is not natural to be confined to little social contact for large amounts of time. Society provides a sundry of different sights, sounds, feelings and stimuli to its inhabitants. To go without outside contact would be living against natures way for man. To fulfill her social need she invents a person she thinks she sees inside the wallpaper. I didn't realize for a long time what the thing was that dim sub pattern, but now I am quite sure it is a woman.(p224). The vision of a woman is clearly an indication of the ill effects caused by prolonged isolation. Her hallucination becomes so vivid that she becomes involved with her imagined character. In a frantic action the now malfunctioning narrator began to try to free the women from behind the wallpaper's pattern. She destroys yards of the wallpaper. I pulled and she shook, I shook and she pulled, and before morning we had peeled off yards of that paper.(p227) The treatment contributes to her impending mental demise She is first diagnosed with a minor nervous disorder. On her last day of treatment she is participating with hallucinations as if they are real. This obviously shows that the appointed cure only serves to fortify the minor illness. The negative qualities of the rehabilitation regimen causes her to go insane. I am getting angry enough to do something desperate jump out of the window would be an admirable Johnston 3 exercise.'' (228).Towards the end of the story, the narrator is delirious and constantly creeping around the room. Sappho - Greek Poet in Ancient / Classical History Basic Data on Sappho: The dates of Sappho or Psappho are not known. She is thought to have been born around 610 B.C. and to have died in about 570. This was the period of the sages Thales, considered, by Aristotle, the founder of natural philosophers, and Solon, the lawgiver of Athens. In Rome, it was the time of the legendary kings. [See Timeline.] Sappho is thought to have come from Mytilene on the island of Lesbos. Sapphos Poetry: Playing with the available meters, Sappho wrote moving lyric poetry. A poetic meter was named in honor of her. Sappho wrote odes to the goddesses, especially Aphrodite the subject of Sapphos complete surviving mode, and love poetry, including the wedding genre (epithalamia), using vernacular and epic vocabulary. She also wrote about herself, her womens community, and her times. Her writing about her times was very different from her contemporary Alcaeus, whose poetry was more political. Transmission of Sapphos Poetry: Although we do not know how Sapphos poetry was transmitted, by the Hellenistic Era when Alexander the Great (d. 323 B.C.) had brought Greek culture from Egypt to the Indus River, Sapphos poetry was published. Along with the writing of other lyric poets, Sapphos poetry was categorized metrically. By the Middle Ages most of Sapphos poetry was lost, and so today there are only parts of four poems. Only one of them is complete. There are also fragments of her poetry, including 63 complete, single lines and perhaps 264 fragments. The fourth poem is a recent discovery from rolls of papyrus in Cologne University. Legends About Sapphos Life: There is a legend that Sappho leaped to her death as the result of a failed love affair with a man named Phaon. This is probably untrue. Sappho is usually counted  as a lesbian the very word coming from the island where Sappho lived, and Sapphos poetry clearly shows that she loved some of the women of her community, whether or not the passion was expressed sexually. Sappho may have been married to a wealthy man named Cercylas. Established Facts About Sappho: Larichus and Charaxus were Sapphos brothers. She also had a daughter named Cleis or Claà ¯s. In the community of women in which Sappho participated and taught, singing, poetry, and dance played a big part. Earthly Muse: An elegiac poet of the first century B.C. named Antipater of Thessalonica cataloged the most respected women poets and called them the nine earthly muses. Dining etiquette and dress codes were also included within the course because of unanimous agreement within our group that both topics are extremely significant to a country’s culture and therefore should be included within cultural awareness training. They are said to be working at a cross-purposes in foreign policy. Each plays important roles that are different but often overlap. It is quite inevitable to have disagreements between these executive and legislative branches. But these foreign policy disputes are actually sometimes constructive or not necessarily bad. Every so often, this can contribute to useful improvements to foreign policies. Significantly, the two branches possess ongoing opportunities in making and altering foreign policies, and the interactions between them continue indefinitely throughout the life of a policy. However, when the foreign policy is poorly served, the relationship between the executive and legislative branches becomes hostile and unpleasant. Having the accountability for check and balance between these government branches, the Congress should critic the administration of the President in the light that it is seeking better partnership with the administration in view of better governance of the country and, in this specific case, progress in the formulation of America foreign policy. The President usually responds to current events in foreign countries and thus initiates U. S. policy. Sometimes, the executive branch wants to begin a foreign policy program that requires legislation, and accordingly proposes legislation to Congress, thereby needing approval from the latter in this situation. Also, the power of negotiation gives the executive branch a dominant role in making foreign policy through international agreements, but the President must take into account congressional opinion because these agreements often require the approval of the Senate or the Congress. The latter also influence agreements by placing in legislation instructions and views concerning international agreements, indicating what kind of agreement would be acceptable. The President also establishes US foreign policy through unilateral statements or joint statements with other governments. The executive branch also establishes foreign policy through legislation, continues to shape policy as it interprets and applies the various provisions of law. Occasionally, the President undertakes a sudden foreign policy action before Congress is fully informed about it. The Congress then usually supports the President, but sometimes it tries to halt or reverse the policy or pass legislation to restrain the President from similar actions in the future. The Congress introduces many resolutions stating the sense of the House on foreign policy, and many of these resolutions are adopted. It sometimes initiates a foreign policy by using legislation to establish a new program, set objectives and guidelines, authorize and direct the executive branch to undertake specified activities, and by earmarking appropriations used in a specified way. At times, the Congress pressures the executive branch into a new direction in foreign policy by threatening to pass legislation, even though the legislation is not enacted, or by continuing to exhort a policy through many means. Providing advice to the executive branch in informal contacts is also a means of the Congress to shape foreign policy. Regular oversight of executive branch implementation of foreign policy helps the Congress as well in shaping these policies (Grimmet). The international agreements regardless of their title, designation or form whose entry into force with respect to the United States takes place only after two thirds of the US Senate has given its advice and consent under Article II, section 2, Clause 2 of the Constitution, are treaties. On the other hand, international agreements brought into force with respect to the United States on a constitutional basis other than with the advice and consent of the Senate are international agreements other than treaties, and are often referred to as executive agreements. Treaties require the consent of the Senate. The Senate, therefore, may approve, reject or revise a treaty. The Senate approves most of the treaties but some are also rejected. One significant example is the Treaty of Versailles. Executive agreements are far more common than treaties. They do not require the consent of the Senate, though Congress may be notified shortly after an agreement is reached. Unlike treaties, these agreements do not supersede existing statues. Examples are the Yalta and Potsdam agreements and the Vietnam Peace agreement. In summary, the President or the executive branch can make foreign policy through responses to foreign events, proposals for legislation, negotiation of international agreements, policy statements, policy implementation and independent action. Moreover, the Congress can make foreign policy through resolutions and policy statements, legislative directives, legislative pressure, legislative restrictions / funding denials, informal advice, and congressional oversight. The Congress maintains a decisive voice in either supporting the President’s approach or changing it. Changing policies may prove to be quite complex in the short term. A few of the key issues discussed in the article that relate to the text readings are the marketing concept, social responsibility, and changing demographics. Addressing such issues will not only satisfy the sensitive and social groups involved, but open new and potentially profitable opportunities for companies that do so.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  One of the main points that I found useful in the article was how marketing to sensitive and social groups paralleled that of the marketing concept. Successful companies have to fill the needs and wants of their consumers. Sensitive and social groups are part of every companies market. Each company's products and services should be customized to that of their customers. This is called mass customization. How a company defines its social responsibility is also part of the marketing concept. If a company does not care to be viewed as socially responsible, then they will not care how they market products to those groups and the company will suffer. Relationship marketing is a part of the marketing concept and strongly applies to this article. A company wants to build trust with its customers in order to build customer loyalty and a long-term bond. This gives the customer a value-added feature of doing business with a particular company. In marketing orientated companies, the customer's needs have to be targeted and different social classes or issues need to be taken into account. If a company does not take different sensitive and social groups into account when marketing, then they will not build a feeling of goodwill with the consumers. The consumer will think that the firm cares more about selling its goods than the consumer. The firm's social responsibility should be taken into account and work hand-in-hand with the marketing concept. A firm's interests may not portray societies best interests. This is where the societal marketing concept comes into play. Our text states that the marketing concept can be work together with social responsibility. The firm must extend the breadth and time dimension of its marketing goals.

Motivation Case Study

I found both case studies to be very interesting. In the Two Men and a Lot of Trucks case study, I could identify the expectancy theory and Maslow’s needs hierarchy theory. The text states that Mary Ellen quit her well-paying job with benefits to grow her business. What started as a part-time gig working from her dining room table quickly became a successful franchise operation. Mary Ellen’s hard work and dedication paid off as there are currently 152 franchise locations.Maslow’s needs hierarchy theory can also been found in this case study through Mary Ellen’s devotion to providing superior customer service and using her prior work experience. Mary Ellen was able to create high-performing teams by establishing Stick Men University. Offering this level of training has effectively helped Two Men grow. As Sheets says, â€Å"I want them to be successful as fast as they can. † (Jones, 2007) In the Siemen’s case study I could identify both the exp ectancy theory and the job enrichment theory. The study stated that Kleinfeld wanted employees to work more flexible hours and on weekends.With everyone’s job on the line, Kleinfeld put in the extra effort to motivate workers. He made himself available around the clock and it paid off. Even though Kleinfeld relies on the support of the management board he seems to have the freedom to do his job his way. He has held 10 positions within Siemens which has allowed him â€Å"to explore every corner of the far-flung Siemens empire. † I believe that Kleinfeld used the participative approach to creating high-performing teams within Siemens as he was involved with most aspects of this company’s growth. The Origin, Evolution and Properties of Spiral Galaxies

Spiral galaxies are among the most beautiful and plentiful galaxy types in the cosmos. When artists draw galaxies, spirals are what they first visualize. This is likely due to the fact that the Milky Way is a spiral; as is the neighboring Andromeda Galaxy. Their shapes are the result of long galactic evolution activities that astronomers are still working to understand. Characteristics of Spiral Galaxies Spiral galaxies are characterized by their sweeping arms which stretch out from the central region in a spiral pattern. They are subdivided into classes based on how tightly the arms are wound, with the tightest classified as Sa and those with the most loosely wound arms as Sd. Some spiral galaxies have a bar passing through the center of which the spiral arms extend. These are classified as barred spirals and follow the same sub-classification model as normal spiral galaxies, except with the designators SBa - SBd. Our own Milky Way is a barred spiral, with a thick ridge of stars and gas and dust passing through the central core. Some galaxies are classified as S0. These are galaxies for which it is impossible to tell if a bar is present. Many spiral galaxies have what is known as a galactic bulge. This is a spheroid packed with lots of stars and contains within it a supermassive black hole that binds together the rest of the galaxy. From the side, spirals look like flat disks with central spheroids. We see many stars and clouds of gas and dust. However, they also contain something else: massive haloes of dark matter. This mysterious stuff is invisible to any experiment that has sought to directly observe it. Dark matter plays a role in galaxies, which is also still being determined.   Star Types The spiral arms of these galaxies are filled with lots of hot, young blue stars and even more gas and dust (by mass). In fact, our Sun is sort of an oddity considering the type of company it keeps in this region. Within the central bulge of spiral galaxies with looser spiral arms (Sc and Sd) the population of stars is very similar to that in the spiral arms, young hot blue stars, but in much greater density. In contracts spiral galaxies with tighter arms (Sa and Sb) tend to have mostly old, cool, red stars that contain very little metal. And while the vast majority of the stars in these galaxies are found either within the plane of the spiral arms or the bulge, there exists a halo around the galaxy. While this region is dominated by dark matter, there are also very old stars, usually with very low metallicity, that orbit through the plane of the galaxy in highly elliptical orbits. Formation The formation of spiral arm features in galaxies is mostly due to the gravitational effect of material in the galaxy as waves pass through. This posits that pools of greater mass density slow down and form arms as the galaxy rotates. As gas and dust pass through those arms it gets compressed to form new stars and the arms expand in mass density further, enhancing the effect. More recent models have attempted to incorporate dark matter, and other properties of these galaxies, into a more complex theory of formation. Supermassive Black Holes Another defining characteristic of spiral galaxies is the presence of supermassive black holes at their cores. It is not known if all spiral galaxies contain one of these behemoths, but there is a mountain of indirect evidence that virtually all such galaxies will contain them within the bulge. Dark Matter It was actually of spiral galaxies that first suggested the possibility of dark matter. Galactic rotation is determined by the gravitational interactions of the masses present within the galaxy. But computer simulations of spiral galaxies showed that the rotation velocities differed from those observed. Either our understanding of general relativity was flawed, or another source of mass was present. Since relativity theory has been tested and verified on virtually all scales there has so far been resistance to challenging it. Instead, scientists have postulated that an as-yet-unseen particle exists that does not interact with the electromagnetic force - and most likely not the strong force, and perhaps not even the weak force (though some models do include that property) - but it does interact gravitationally. It is thought that spiral galaxies maintain a dark matter halo; a spherical volume of dark matter that permeates the entire region in and around the galaxy. Dark matter has yet to be detected directly, but there is some indirect observational evidence for its existence.
